Top 5 Reasons San Diego Homeowners Should Go Solar

Top 5 Reasons San Diego Homeowners Should Go Solar

There are many excellent reasons to add a Solar Power system to your home – especially if you live in sunny Southern California. Below are the top 5 Reasons San Diego Homeowners should go solar:

Reason #1: The Environment

This one’s a given – unless you’ve been hiding in a cave. When it comes to the environmental impact of creating electricity, solar power wins hands down. According to this recent article from nytimes.com, solar energy produces between 92 and 98 percent less greenhouse gases then most standard forms of electricity production.

Reason #2: Increasing Energy Costs

As I’m sure you’re aware, San Diego Gas & Electric rates only continue to increase year after year. According to SDGE.com, just last year more then 25% of their San Diego customers saw (or felt!) a “noticeable” increase on their power bill. Although the 25% were the higher end users (those with tier 3 or tier 4 usage), those of us with more then one child living at home generally fall into that category. The good news is, these are also the people that benefit most from solar power!

Reason #3: Home Value Increase

There has been some debate on this one in the past, however, according to lbl.gov, a new Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory report that analyzed data from 2000-2009 revealed an obvious trend of homes with solar installations in Southern California selling for much more then comparable homes without solar. Even without the report, this makes tons of sense. Wouldn’t you pay a little more up front to save thousands in electricity costs?

Reason #4: Make Money

While this isn’t the case with most residential solar customers, there are still a rising number of homeowners here in San Diego that are actually getting paid back by SDGE for having rooftop solar systems that generate more power than the home consumes. As of October 11, 2009, law AB 920 requires “California utilities to compensate Net Energy Metering (NEM) customers for electricity produced in excess of on-site load over a 12-month period.” More plainly, If your solar panels are making more electricity then you’re using, you can expect a nice check in the mail at the end of every year!

Reason #5: Tax Incentives

Converting your home to solar can help you save some of your hard earned cash come tax season. In 2008, the solar investment tax credit (ITC) was enacted as part of the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act. Although it started off as a short term and somewhat small incentive (when first enacted the credit actually had a per project cap of $2000), the solar ITC for residential system owners is now 30% of the total system cost and has been extended through December 31, 2016.
